CiteCount is a web application that provides an accurate word count of your text, excluding in-text citations. It supports MLA, APA, and Chicago style in-text citation formats.

How to Use

  1. Input Text:
    • Type directly into the editor.
    • Paste text from your document.
    • Drag and drop a .docx or .pdf file into the editor.
    • Click the " Paste from Clipboard" button to paste content from your clipboard.
    • Click "Try Example" to load sample text.
  2. View Word Counts: The "Total Words" counter displays the total word count of the text. The "Words without Citations" counter shows the word count excluding citations. The "Citations" counter shows the total number of citations found.
  3. Manage Citations:
    • Click the "Manage Citations" button (on smaller screens) or use the citations panel (on larger screens) to view a list of detected citations.
    • Toggle the "Include in Total" option for each citation to include or exclude it from the word count.
    • Clicking on a citation in the citation table will highlight its location in the text editor.
  4. Format Text: Use the toolbar buttons to apply basic formatting (bold, italic, underline) to your text.
  5. Settings:
    • Click the "Settings" button (gear icon) to access settings.
    • Enable or disable AutoSave to automatically save your work.
    • Enable or disable "Warn on leave" to receive a warning if you attempt to leave the page without saving.
    • Toggle Spell Check to use native spell checking.
    • Use "Reset All Settings" to reset all settings to default.
  6. Other Apps:
    • Click the "More Apps" button (three horizontal lines icon) to access other useful IB apps.
